Controlled diabetics given access to fully comprehensive life cover and benefits

In a major step in the right direction for diabetics, fully comprehensive life cover is now available for well controlled diabetics with type 1, 1.5 and 2 diabetes. The paradigm-shifting move means well-controlled diabetics are now offered fully comprehensive life cover, as well as disability and critical illness benefits.

According to the World Diabetes Foundation, around 850,000 South Africans are living with diabetes. Of these, around 40% control the disease and live without complications. Approximately 85% – 90% of people diagnosed with diabetes are type 2 sufferers; but even more concerning is the fact that many people who have type 2 diabetes are undiagnosed.

‘As medical technology and awareness changes, so must we. Medical advances in treating diabetes, as well as increased awareness and early detection, have led us to change the way we view diabetic risk. We now offer the best terms and benefits’, says Grant Hanafay, Head of Underwriting at Liberty Life.

‘We’re all about encouraging people to live the best lives they can – we want them to own their lives, and this means controlling their diabetes and living a healthy life. If they do this, there is no reason why they can’t enjoy the same benefits as everyone else.’

Diabetes is a manageable, controllable disease, with a healthy diet, regular exercise and the correct medication this disease can be well controlled and the patient can lead a normal life.

According to Diabetic South Africa, it is estimated that 1.5 million people in SA have diabetes. Diabetes accounts for 3.8 million deaths worldwide a year, exacting a toll similar to HIV/AIDS.
