PwC focus: Unemployment rate increases in 2019Q1

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) reported on May 14th that South Africa’s unemployment rate increased from 27.1% of the labour force in the fourth quarter of 2018 to 27.6% during the first quarter of 2019. A decline in employment numbers as well as an increase in the labour force brought the unemployment rate precariously close to the 15-year level of 27.7% seen in several quarters during 2017. Some 6.2 million job-seeking South Africans are now unemployed, with another nearly 3 million discouraged workers having given up on finding employment. (more…)
