Westbrooke Renewable Energy Alternatives, managed by Westbrooke Alternative Asset Management, has expanded its renewable energy portfolio by acquiring operational solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) assets. These assets are located across 91 Shell Downstream South Africa (SDSA) service stations. This acquisition was made alongside CVE South Africa, a seasoned independent power producer, from Thebe Solar Energy, which strategically exited its position.
The portfolio generates approximately 7.8 GWh of renewable energy annually, aligning with Westbrooke Real’s strategy to invest in behind-the-meter solar projects across South Africa. With CVE South Africa as an experienced partner, Westbrooke continues to back high-quality renewable energy ventures.
A strategic partnership driving renewables
Westbrooke Real and CVE South Africa have jointly invested in four renewable portfolios, underscoring their shared commitment to clean energy. The two companies now jointly own over 12MW of solar projects, reflecting a robust collaboration.
This transaction highlights Westbrooke Real’s dedication to structuring and executing complex, high-yield investment deals in the South African renewable sector. The strategy allows investors access to premium renewable energy assets, with additional capital reserved for future commitments alongside leading industry operators.
Long-term benefits for renewable energy assets
Under the ownership of Westbrooke Real and CVE South Africa, the 91 SDSA sites will continue to benefit from stable long-term investment and operational support. This ensures high-quality management, reliable energy output, and value retention.
Nox Mlalazi, Westbrooke Real Transactor, remarked: “The transaction demonstrates our ability to source and execute attractive investment opportunities in operational renewable energy assets, supporting our goal of building a robust and resilient portfolio for our investors.”
René Laks, Country Manager at CVE South Africa, added: “We are pleased to continue our partnership with Westbrooke and to support these assets, contributing to South Africa’s clean energy goals.”
The key benefits of Westbrooke’s investment
This acquisition reinforces Westbrooke Renewable Energy Alternatives’ position as a key player in South Africa’s renewable energy sector while providing a sustainable energy solution for SDSA service stations. The collaboration with CVE South Africa ensures operational efficiency and long-term performance of the portfolio assets, benefiting investors and contributing to the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.
