Deposit insurance scheme for SA proposed

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and the National Treasury have proposed a deposit insurance scheme for South Africa.

The SARB has published, for public comment, a discussion paper titled “Designing a deposit insurance scheme for South Africa”. The discussion paper, aimed at soliciting views on the design features of such a scheme, is complementary to the measures proposed in the discussion paper to “Strengthen South Africa’s resolution framework for financial institutions” published on 13 August 2015.
